It is formed within a few days by the incorporation of calcium and phosphate compounds from saliva into the soft bacterial plaque. Tartar, which lies below the gum line on the root surface, has a dark brown to grey color and is referred to as calculus.

Fissure sealing

Fissure sealing is a minimally invasive preventive measure against tooth decay. Deep fissures and pits on the chewing surfaces of the molars are sealed with a light-curing resin to keep bacteria and food debris out. It reduces the risk of tooth decay in these areas by up to 90 % and is particularly recommended for children and adolescents after the permanent molars have erupted.
